After more than 3 years and a dozen public meetings, the Boston Transportation Department (BTD) and Charlestown residents created a “Surface Option” plan for Rutherford Avenue and Sullivan Square that would greatly improve Charlestown and neighboring communities. The Community Approved Option
The Rutherford Avenue/Sullivan Square Reconstruction Project will...
• Improve pedestrian connections between community and Sullivan Square Station
• Create public/open space
• Provide opportunities for appropriate development
• Decrease congestion by distributing traffic
• Provide bicycle connections
• Increase on-street parking
• Protect Main Street from cut-through traffic

Welcome to the Surface Option Supporters (SOS) website. We are a group of concerned Boston area residents, community groups, business owners and others who are invested in a project to redesign Rutherford Avenue and Sullivan Square.
After 8 detailed meetings and traffic study presentations, the community agreed upon the Surface Option which eliminates the unnecessary underpasses. Although the project was approved by the community, it is now in jeopardy.
